    Marvel Powers United VR Livestream: Assembling A Superhero Dream Team

    Marvel: Powers United VR released yesterday for Oculus Rift. If you missed it, you can see our full review right here and a super-detailed character guide with strategies and powers for all 18 heroes right here.

    So for today’s livestream we’re embarking on a superhero-fueled journey into the Marvel Universe to play as 18 of your favorite characters from Thor, Spider-Man, and Wolverine to Captain America and The Hulk.

    We’ll be livestreaming Onward on PC today using an Oculus Rift with Touch starting very soon as of the time this is being published (which means we’ll start at approximately 3:00PM PT) and aim to last for about an hour or so. We’ll be livestreaming directly to the UploadVR Facebook page. You can see the full stream embedded right here down below once it’s up:

    It’s time to suit up and take the fight to the enemy. That’s right, Marvel: Powers United VR is finally available to buy on Oculus Rift this week. Other than that it’s not a huge week for PC VR, but there’s definitely some interesting stuff to check out.

    Marvel: Powers United VR, from Sanzaru Games
    Price: $39.99 (Rift)

    The long-awaited Marvel VR game finally arrives. Step into the suits of your favorite heroes and take on hordes of baddies in this wave-based action game. Though it certainly has its charms, we found Powers United VR to be a little underwhelming.

    Soviet Lunapark VR, from Mundfish
    Price: $18.99 (Rift, Vive)

    This strange VR wave shooter from Atomic Heart developer Mundfish finally comes out of Early Access this week. Explore an abandoned Soviet theme park with friends and fight off the hordes of crazy mechanical creations that still dwell within. Lunapark has striking visuals and loads of charm, and might just be worth your time.

    Arrowborn, from Kung Fu Robots
    Price: $14.99 (Rift, Vive)

    Yep, more archery in Early Access. But Arrowborn does at least have its own spin on the genre, pitting players against each other in competitive shooting ranges that make you go for the high score. You can customize loadouts and more, too. Definitely worth a look for archery fans. We’ll have more thoughts on it via an in-depth hands-on and some gameplay footage soon.

    Skydance Used Oculus Medium To Design Archangel: Hellfire’s Mechs

    Archangel: Hellfire is a really good VR mech combat game. We praised the freedom of movement, variety of weapons, and intensity of its player-versus-player combat in our full review and are excited to see what the development studio does with their upcoming Walking Dead VR game.

    As it turns out, I have a feeling a big reason why the gameplay feels so good is because the developers used VR during the development process itself by building 3D models of the mechs inside of sculpting tool, Oculus Medium. My favorite line from this short mini-documentary (embedded below) that Oculus published about Archangel: Hellfire developer Skydance Interactive occurs right at the start from an unnamed developer: “If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a Medium concept is worth 1,000 pictures.”

    The implication is that, because of how immersive a 3D object is when you’re experiencing it inside of a VR headset, it’s way more powerful than just a standard image or even a 3D model on a flat screen.

    We’ve seen similar ideas in practice from other developers, such as prototyping levels with Tilt Brush. As VR continues to penetrate the mainstream, we expect to see more examples of it being used in this way.

    Rejoice fellow PSVR fans, The Persistence is here! This brilliant new horror game highlights a rock solid week of new releases on the PlayStation Store. Let’s dig in.

    The Persistence, from Firesprite
    Price: $29.99

    Taking ques from the likes of Dead Space, Resident Evil 7 and Rogue Legacy, The Persistence is a first-person horror game in which your monster-infested space ship is randomly reworked every time you die. It’s creepy for sure, but you shouldn’t let that put you off playing what’s one of the best PSVR games of the last few months.

    Detached, from Anshar Studios
    Price: $24.99

    Sticking with space, there’s finally a PSVR port of Detached launching this week, too. In this intense multiplayer game, you take on another opponent in zero gravity environments, trying to secure items before they do. It’s a frantic game of cat and mouse and well worth looking into.

    VRobot, from Nival International
    Price: $14.99

    Want to smash stuff as a giant robot? Of course you do, and VRobot lets you do just that. Use two PS Move controllers to pick up buildings, toss ships and more in a destructive playground. Maybe not the most essential purchase this week but still lots of potential for fun.

    Bow to Blood Touches Down On PSVR Next Month

    August 28th is going to be a busy day for PSVR owners.

    Indie developer Tribetoy this week confirmed that its VR action game, Bow to Blood, is coming to Sony’s headset at the end of next month. In the game, you team up with others to pilot a flying ship and then take on other opponents in a reality TV show. You’ll need to multitask between operating weapons and steering your vehicle as you take part in battles and races. The game was announced at Paris Games Week last year with the below trailer, though we haven’t really seen it since.

    Tribetoy also confirmed several voice actors for the game this week, including Overwatch’s Greg Chun and Erik Braa from World of Warcraft.

    That’s not the only new PSVR game releasing that day, though. Aspyr’s intriguing VR adventure game, Torn, is also set to debut on the platform on the same day, as is the highly-anticipated PSVR exclusive multiplayer shooter, Firewall: Zero Hour. It’s going to be tough to stand out between these three games.

    Arizona Sunshine Dev Takes On Viveport Arcade With Vertigo Arcades

    There’s an all-new way to experience Vertigo Games’ Arizona Sunshine, and it’s not inside your home.

    The Dutch studio this week announced a new arm of its company, Vertigo Arcades, which aims to bring both hardware and software to arcades around the world with content both developed both by itself and other studios. To that end, Vertigo announced a content launcher named VR Arcade Suite that also provides developers with the tools to easily integrate arcade-specific features like new tracking systems and mixed reality functionality into their games. Outside of the studio’s own work, games like Space Pirate Trainer and Island 359 have already signed onto the scheme.

    Vertigo Arcades is already running in 300 venues across 40 countries.

    The location-based VR arcade scene has long been considered to be one of the most promising areas of the emerging VR industry. Vertigo isn’t the first to deliver on this concept; HTC is also making a push for location-based VR with its Viveport Arcade division, which launched back in 2016 and at the time estimated the business would be worth $100 million. It will be interesting to see how Vertigo plans to break into the market, though it has one big ace up its sleeve: Arizona Sunshine.

    As you can see in the trailer above, Vertigo is retooling its popular zombie shooter into Arizona Sunshine: LB VR Edition. Pushing the game beyond home headset limitations, you’ll be able to experience missions with up to four players using untethered HTC Vive headsets, haptic suits and gun-shaped controllers. Vertigo is also teaming up with Nomadic to bring an all-new Arizona Sunshine game to Vertigo Arcades.

    Arizona Sunshine is considered to be one of VR’s most successful games thus far, having generated $1.4 million in sales during its PC VR launch month back in 2016 and since going on to support PSVR, Windows VR and adding DLC missions and more.

    Vertigo will be showing the game off at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany next month.

    SteamVR Home Gets New Maps And More In Fresh Update

    SteamVR Home is getting yet more fun stuff to play with this week.

    Valve just introduced another update for its VR hub world which brings in new locations and assets to decorate them with. You can now explore a supervillain’s lair with friends, solving puzzles and unlocking secret rooms and new collectibles from one of the developer’s most beloved games, Team Fortress 2. Valve has also changed up the Summit Pavilion location with some new additions that allow you to customize how your personal space looks even further.

    Expanding on that customization even further, Valve is also introducing asset packs. These allow creators to share assets they’ve made like models and textures with other creators so they can expand their own resources for making environments.

    Elsewhere there are some small adjustments, like a reorganized community wall, a new category for free VR apps and resizable panels.

    It’s interesting to see Valve expand SteamVR Home with this strand of novel, adventurous content to expand what friends can do while Oculus doubles down on expanding customization within its smaller Oculus Home spaces. We’re fans of both approaches, but we certainly like how Valve’s efforts including features like SteamVR Collectibles cater to the gamers in all of us.
